Medical Detox
Medical Detox
Drug or alcohol detox begins when a person stops taking a substance that the body has become dependent. Before someone can participate in an alcohol and drug treatment program they must detox from the substance.
Though the recovery process from alcohol or drug addiction doesn't really begin until the detox or withdrawal period has ended, entering a drug and alcohol detox center is the first step to recovery and should only be attempted in the safe and comfortable environment of a licensed detox center.
Without medical help, the more severe withdrawal symptoms can become so unbearable that the addict experiencing withdrawals will return to the substance that he or she is detoxing from rather than complete the detox.
Detoxification from drugs or alcohol can be traumatic to the human body. It needs to be done under medical supervision only. Do not attempt to detox from alcohol or any type of drugs without proper medical, professional assistance.
Over time, drinking alcohol or using drugs can cause physical dependence. Stopping drinking alcohol or using drugs, results in withdrawal from these substances.
